Empowering women in Egypt 2023

The General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), in cooperation with the United Nations Office in Cairo, organized a seminar entitled ‘Investment and the Principles of Empowering women For a more competitive private economy’ within the framework of the extended partnership between the two parties to promote empowering women and promote mechanisms to encourage companies to achieve gender equality.

The Advisor to the CEO of SAGIA, Mr. Amr Nour El-Din, delivered a speech to SAGIA on behalf of SAGIA CEO Mr. Hossam Heiba and affirmed SAGIA’s commitment to implementing its role in raising awareness in the areas of social responsibility and gender equality. In addition to affirmative action in favor of Empowering women in the private sector, which increases the profitability and productivity of companies.

Mr. Magdy Al-Nabrawy, Head of Business Development Sector at the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones, said that GAFI adopts “women’s economic empowerment” as one of the determinants of social responsibility projects that are proposed to private sector institutions for implementation, indicating that GAFI has coordinated with 120 major private sector companies to carry out their social responsibility in implementing the second goal of Egypt’s Vision 2030, which is to empower women, youth and the most needy groups and ensure their economic rights. .

Ms. Christine Arab, UN Women Country Representative in Egypt, said that the cooperation between the United Nations and the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones has contributed to increasing the empowerment of women in the private sector and in senior management positions, which is the best path to women’s economic empowerment.

 

78 Egyptian companies have joined the Declaration of Principles for Women's Empowerment

Ms. Arab added that 78 Egyptian companies have joined the Declaration of Principles for Women’s Empowerment (WEPs), launched by UN Women globally in collaboration with the United Nations Global Compact initiative, to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace.

She also stressed that the International Finance Corporation (IFC)  report on companies over the past decade showed a positive correlation between the number of women on boards and the increase in the profitability and sales of companies.
