What is COP 28 2023?
COP 28 2023 is the 28th annual meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 30 to December 12, 2023, and was attended by many important figures, including U.S. President Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The goal of COP 28 2023 is to limit global warming to 1.5 °C in the long term, accelerate the transition to clean energy sources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, deliver climate finance from richer countries to poorer countries, and work towards a new agreement for developing countries.
Egypt's Participation in COP 28
The Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi participated in the presidential segment of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28). His participation came upon an invitation extended by the President of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
It is worth noting that Egypt participated with a delegation from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Environment, headed by Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment and the Coordinator and Ministerial Envoy for the COP27 Climate Conference.
What Did Egypt Present in COP 28 2023?
Egypt presented at COP 28 2023 the efforts made during its presidency of the COP 27, including the launch of the National Climate Change Strategy 2050, the update of the nationally determined contributions, the identification of 2030 as the target for reaching 42% of renewable energy production, the implementation of the “NWFE” program, and the investment packages offered at the Environmental and Climate Investment Forum.
It also presented Egyptian success stories at the national level in dealing with climate change and its impact on different sectors, as well as several side events according to the thematic days of the conference, in coordination with various ministries, in addition to side events for sponsors, private sector institutions, universities, UN organizations, and civil society organizations.
Not only that, but the status of many of the initiatives launched during COP27 also presented, such as the ENACT initiative to promote nature-based solutions to accelerate the climate transition, the AWARE initiative to take action on water adaptation and resilience, and the Climate Solutions for Peace initiative.
President El-Sisi's Speech at COP 28
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stated that this conference, similar to the Sharm el-Sheikh conference (COP 27) last year, was held amidst serious political and international challenges, which are not less important than the repercussions of climate change. That requires us to work sincerely to ensure that this conference comes up with ambitious results and acceleration of fulfilling previous pledges.
He expressed the urgent need to boost collective and urgent action to deal with the challenges of climate change in a way that enhances the ability to ensure development that preserves the planet for future generations and deals with the severe climate impacts and disasters that current generations are witnessing, which exceed the ability of countries, especially developing countries to adapt to its effects on different development sectors.
The Minister of Environment's Speech at COP 28 2023
Dr. Yasmine Fouad, the Egyptian Minister of Environment, stated at COP 28 2023 that Egypt has expanded its support for vulnerable groups and communities to enhance its ability to deal with the effects of climate change through the Hayat Karima initiative and the implementation of the results of COP27, including the activation of the committee responsible for preparing recommendations on arrangements for financing developing countries to cope with losses and damages.
She added that Egypt is committed to accelerating the transition to sustainable transportation, so it signed an agreement with Siemens to build and finance the high-speed train. It has also continued to implement its sustainable transportation means, such as the monorail and the metro, and gave attention to the tram and railway system in Alexandria.
